A motorcade on January 8, participated in by the different constituent units (CUs) from across the country kicks off the centennial year-long celebration of the University of the Philippines.

Spearheading the kick-off rites is the UP Alumni Association (UPAA).

The motorcade starts at 12 noon from the UP Manila campus in Padre Faura where the first UP campus was established in 1908. Along the route, contingents coming from UP Baguio, UP Los Baños and UP Extension Program in Pampanga join the motorcade all the way to UP Diliman (UPD) in Quezon City.

A lion dance, ati-atihan performances and production numbers by resident UPD dance groups welcome the alumni, students, faculty, staff, supporter and well-wishers at the Oblation Plaza fronting Quezon Hall.

Sky divers bearing the emblem of the seven CUs will descend in the open area near the College of Mass of Communication.

Tambuli players sound their horns atop Quezon Hall, amid the ceremonial firing of 100 rockets (kwitis) to announce the start of the program.

Fernando Javier, BSCE '33, one of the oldest living alumni, lights the flame of the first torch to be passed on to 98 others around the Academic Oval.

The 99th torch bearer lights UP President Emerlinda R Román's torch who in turn lights the cauldron at Quezon Hall to symbolize the UP Flame.

The entire ceremony is accompanied by a drum and bugle corps.

After the lighting of cauldron is the simultaneous ringing of the Carillon Bells, 100 gun salute and 10 volley shots from the cannon to usher the official opening of the UP Centennial Year by President Román.
The "UP @100" lights display ensues also at Quezon Hall together with the lighting of the acacia trees dotting the Academic Oval.

Following the 100 lights is the community singing of UP Naming Mahal led by the various chorales of the University.

An open air concert at the Amphitheater highlights the celebration at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The concert features acclaimed UP alumni in the entertainment industry like Ryan Cayabyab and Nanette Inventor, along with internationally renowned performing groups from the University like the UP Madrigal Singers, the UP Concert Chorus, the UP Symphonic Orchestra, the UP Symphonic Band, the UP Jazz Orchestra, and the UP Pep Squad.

A grand fireworks display caps the evening celebration.

All UP alumni and friends are invited to take part in this historic event.
